My Favorites Shelf
Hi everyone!
Sweetscribe here, (who else would it be?) and I want to wish you a late Valentine’s Day! So here are some hearts for you: <3❤💗💖💛
Okay, now down to business. Have you ever had a favorite book? Yes? (It’s okay if you haven’t, because I understand. It’s also okay if you’ve had too many to choose, because I understand that SOO MUCH.) Have you ever had a favorite series?? Yes? Now, have you ever had a favorites shelf?
It’s okay if you don’t, because I have one and I will share it with you. What are friends for, right? So, my idea for this post is that I will review one of the books on my favorites shelf. And I will try to make you like it so much that you add it to your own favorites shelf!!
Book Number One:
The Great Greene Heist, by Varian Johnson.
Okay, I’m not going to lie, I don’t usually gravitate toward contemporary books. However! This book blew my mind. Not a single word, or chapter for that matter, is wasted. And this author definitely used the “show don’t tell” rule. I could feel the characters’ emotions, without having to be told outright what they’re feeling. As an aspiring author myself, I find that very impressive , especially since the way he does it is so subtle.
Aside from the writing style, the plot itself is also very intriguing. My general summary of the story would be: the main character gets himself in trouble with a wrecked con, also losing his best friend in the process. Said best friend runs for student body president, and a certain kid runs against her, bribing the principal to let him enter late. The main character is informed of this injustice, and decides, for the safety of the school clubs and for his attachment to his ex-best friend, to pull another con to outwit the cheater. Will he prevail? Or will the cheater ruin the main character’s most daring heist yet?
The story includes elements of a boy-girl relationship, con artists, Star Trek nerds, school dances, and a really cool guy with a tie. Content wise, I wouldn’t put anything against this book. Perhaps the one mention of a toga party, referring to activities that the main character’s brother seems do be doing while he’s in college. Other than that, there’s nothing inappropriate that I’ve seen. Of course, if you read the book and come across something, don’t hesitate to tell me, that way I can update my review. 😁😊
I hope you love the book as much as I do! If you do read it, please leave a comment about what your favorite part or character was!
Stay sweet!
